Description: Amherst #99 - Diesel Electric Switcher. Built in December 1949 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Eddystone, Pennsylvania. Builders #74640; B+B wheel arrangement; weight- 120 tons; HP- 1000; prime mover 6 cylinder duel fuel 600-series (diesel – natural gas). Built as DF-100 it was a test bed for Baldwins new 600-series engines and later repowered with a standard prime mover for use as a plant switcher. Sold to Patapsco & Back Rivers and repowered again with an 606A prime mover for use at the Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point, MD plant in Febuary 1953. 335 was sold to Bethlehem Mines (same #) in Charleston, WV in 1976 and later sold to Amherst Industries through a local scrap company. Where it became Amherst #99. The unit has been well cared for by Amherst Industries. Donated in 2001 and currently is stored at the Amherst facility in Port Amherst (Charleston), WV. Unit is not currently operable.
